Photobiont cells 6–15 µm wide. Apothecia round to rather irregular, confluent or not, 0.4–1.5 mm wide, sessile to subimmersed; disc pinkish brown to dark reddish brown, ±plane to strongly convex, epruinose; margin thin, soon becoming excluded. Exciple 30–60 µm thick, inspersed with orange-red pigment, K+ reddish purple. Epihymenium c. 10 µm thick, inspersed with orange to red-brown granules, K+ reddish purple. Hymenium 30–60 µm thick, orange-pigmented in the upper part, colourless below. Hypothecium 40–100 µm thick, colourless or inspersed to some extent, with the same orange K+ reddish purple pigment. Paraphyses simple or occasionally branched, rather robust, 2–3 µm thick; apices tapered or rounded, not noticeably swollen. Asci 25–40 × 9–12 µm. Ascospores narrowly ellipsoidal, smooth, 9–12 × 2.5–4.0 μm. Pycnidia not seen. CHEMISTRY: Thallus K– or K+ pale yellow-brown, C–, P+ orange-red; containing fumarproto-cetraric acid and protocetraric acid (trace). Apothecia K+ reddish purple; containing russulone and norrussulone (trace). |
